Our hero is a teenage Viking named Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, who is voiced by Jay Baruchel. Hiccup lives in Berk, a settlement perched on the edge of a mountain that is surrounded by crags and aeries where dangerous dragons reside. Hiccup informs us that his hamlet is rather ancient, but that every single house there is brand new. An worrisome omen. The people have been engaged in war with the dragons from the beginning of time, led by his father Stoick (portrayed by Gerard Butler) and the dragon master Cobber (portrayed by Craig Ferguson). The Vikings are large and strong, but their sole weapons are clubs, swords, and spears, while the dragons are massive and spew fire. It would appear that this fight will not be a fair one. If you only listened to them, though, you wouldn't have any reason to believe that they are more intelligent than the dragons.
The narrative involves an instruction for young Hiccup to remain indoors in the event of a dragon assault. The courageous young man, however, grabs a cannon, fires it at the adversary, and, by all appearances, kills at least one of them. When he enters the forest in search of his meal, he discovers a chained-up and injured young dragon that is around the same age as him. He lets it go, and the two of them form a friendship; during this process, he learns that dragons can really be rather kind. When he and his new companion Toothless get back at the settlement, they help form an alliance with the good dragons to fight the evil dragons, who are grotesquely ugly and snarling holdouts.
